This is gonna be a huge rant. I'll probably say multiple stupid things so pull me up if I do...
Me and Dale were talking about emos and stuff the other day and how dumb they are. Just how people go for the whole 'emo' look and attitude as a form of rebellion, as an act against conformity, yet end up achieving the opposite by joining this massive bandwagon of clones and sheep. It's just so stupid. One of the things I hate the most is when people can't just be themselves. I s'pose that's an impossibility really - what we are is just a combination of what we've seen in other people, a direct result of our environment - but that doesn't mean we can't think for ourselves (I think that sentence was contradictory, but whatever). I hate all these mainstream mini-cultures, you know the ones - there's the majority group who all listen to whatever's currently on C4 and The Edge.
Actually forget what I was on about, it's time to insult secular music. Has anyone else noticed that pretty much EVERY single song on C4, The Edge, ZM etc follows the same formula? There's nothing original, innovative or anything. It's all just one formula applied in a couple of different ways so you THINK what you're hearing is different. Almost every song on there follows some shitty repetitive 4/4 beat that I could have whipped up in 5 minutes on Fruity Loops. None of it takes skill. It doesn't matter what they sing/rap/talk about as long as it sticks to that same old catchy formula. I mean, think about it - besides the crappy, highly cliched, emotional music pretty much every song on there is telling girls they shouldn't respect themselves and should give head at the click of a guys fingers, and telling guys that they should join some crew of gangsta wanna-bes who don't have a brain to go on and who think of girls as objects. That's a long, badly worded sentence, but you get the point. I just don't understand what the appeal is. Effectively all that music is doing is insulting you and telling you to ditch your brains and follow some ridiculous 'ideal', and the worst part is you're listening. I actually just don't have words to express how angry it makes me. Especially girls, they make me the most angry. How can you listen to music that's basically encouraging male superiority? Do you enjoy being objectified?
I'm sure that by now someone's gonna be mad that I'm insulting their music, but whatever. If people weren't such sheep this wouldn't happen.
Probably my least eloquent blog yet. I'll probably rant some more tomorrow. It's the holidays after all. What better time to insult almost everyone I know by releasing all my pent up anger.

oh, and now the underground is the new mainstream.
back in the 80s and 90s nobody even knew what "emo" was, but now all people care about is how their fringe looks and whether if listening to MCR makes them look cool. I feel pretty bad knowing what 90s "emo" bands are like and comparing them to the modern counterparts.. terrible. I think the whole term is retarded to start off with. Everyone's emotional. The guy who pretty much originated the genre (Ian MacKaye) thinks it's retarded.
Id just like to say that the music playing on radio stations is not representative of ALL secular music. As secular simply means removed from the church, most music is secular. This includes (most) classical, jazz, electronic music etc. We are actually in the period where music is evolving and differentiating the fastest it ever has in the history of the human race, it just seems we're all too thick headed to appreciate it!!!!!!!
However if u were to replace secular with "mainstream" then i would completely agree with you!!!
ps i was talking to a drum teacher and apparently hip hop beats are actually more complex than they would first appear to be. I cant remember exactly what he said but it went something along the lines of them not actually being in 4/4 and actually in some other crazy time signature that sounds like 4/4 but something blah blah blah . . . . . .I hope that's very thought provoking!!! hehehe

I agree that music is evolving the fastest and in general I love it, and do appreciate it. But mainstream music is just crap mostly.
That is interesting... I don't know enough about timing to disagree. But even if it isn't in 4/4, that doesn't make it any less unoriginal. It's still a basic beat being repeated over and over.
some guys do make good beats Rowan.. check out Nujabes, Jay Dee and The Roots for examples.
But are they mainstream?
And I'm generalising here.
i'd say the Roots are pretty big, but other than that.. the other two are pretty much underground. oops :p
or even someone like outkast.. they are much better than the rest of the mainstream pack
ok i agree with what u have said here but also i have to say.....you have to admire justin timberlake....im sorry but wow....he pretty much brought in the style of pop at the moment...that boy knows how to make hits...and wether u like his music or not (which unashamedly i do) you have to admire a guy who can sing "im bringing sexy back" in a voice that sounds like a woman and still be one of the sexiest men of our time
Rowan I'm with you completely 100% !!! I always say I hate rap! an not because everyone else likes it. Mostly because I don't see a point in listening to it! It just talks about girls and their bodies and really insults us! And it's hard to believe that most girls can't see that, or worst, ignores it! And guys, the more they listen to this, the more they become skinheads! I absolutely agree with you 110 % !!!! It's like reading your own post lol :D
